6/30/2018

1.) Enso Portable

Enso Portable is a portable distrobution of the community version of Enso Launcher (of which is not developed anymore) which is a quasi-modal "humanized" app launcher for Windows.

GOOD
  • Easily teach the app to open specific apps and sites
There is a learning function to the app that allows the user to teach the app to open specific items by typing "learn as open" and then clicking on the item one wants it to learn to open.
  • Can go to existing open windows
By using the "go" command users can switch to their already open windows making this a bit of a window navigator as well as a launcher.
BAD
  • Usage tends to be slowed by the caps lock
Function of the app relies on the caps lock key being pressed to enter commands, which can slow some people down by having to hold that key down when they are typing commands.

2.) Find and Run Robot

Find and Run Robot is a hotkey launched search box aimed at keyboard users that uses an adaptive live search to find the programs and files one needs.

GOOD
  • Launches apps quickly
Due to an adaptive search that caches users searches, once an item has been launched previously it will be found quicker the next time one want to search and use it.
  • Extendable through plugins
There are plugins available for the launcher such as a clipboard manager or a calculator, all things that add to the usefulness of the launcher depending on one's needs.
  • Powerful alias functionality
BAD
  • A bit slower than other launchers
  • Quite old fashioned look and it isn't very customizable

3.) Wox

GOOD
  • search engine everything integrated
    search engine everything integrated
  • Extensible with addons
Addons such as choclatey and Clipboard are some of the more popular ones, but it stands to reason that just about anything will be extensible if someone writes a plugin in order to perform that specific function.
  • Easily search the web
There is a built in web search function in the Wox launcher that allows users to easily search sites like IMDB or Wikipedia by prefixing their searches with keywords such as "wiki".
  • Allows for user customization
There are themes(https://ift.tt/1T35p2O) available for the app as well as plugins(https://ift.tt/1hbWEqe) both of witch allow the user to customize the launcher to their liking.
  • Really fast
    Faster than most other launchers.
BAD
  • Not possible to uninstall plugins
If you add plugins, you can't uninstall them, you can only disable them. If you install the clipboard plugin you cannot even delete your clipboard history.
  • Buggy, many crashes
The application crashes often. Many plugins are not tested very well and even the default version crashes many times without knowing why and when.
  • UI flicker
The UI flickers when using the app and does not have any foreseeable fix other than speeding the app up, which did not completely alleviate the issue.

4.) Executor

GOOD
  • Looks are easily customized
Layout as well as fonts and color are are adjustable in the settings. The app is also themeable, which combined with the other customizations makes for an app anyone can make look how they want.
  • Easily add what you want to launch
Executor works with drag and drop, so if there is a shortcut you want to add to the app, just drag and drop it, an app, drag and drop it. Pretty easy to do and very convenient.
  • Set custom keyboard commands
Once programmed the app does not even need pulled up as the user can launch apps or shortcuts by using pre-programmed keypresses.
BAD
  • May take time to teach it the apps you want to launch
While Executor does learn from ones usage, upon first using it it may not always find specifically the app one wants which means it need taught the correct app. After time this gets better but may be frustrating at first.

5.) Listary

GOOD
  • More than just an app launcher
  • Supports other explorers
It supports not only Windows Explorer but also XYplorer, Directory Opus, Total Commander and all the other explorer alternatives.
  • Search as you type everywhere
You can start typing on the desktop or any folders and it'll just search for you.
  • It's also a launcher
Once you find the file you need, you can launch it or use custom actions.
BAD
  • Slow development
Version 6 has been promised to come out for 4 years now.

6.) TaskLayout

GOOD
  • Combo "task launch and arrange" tool

7.) Launchy

Launchy is a free cross-platform utility designed to help you forget about your start menu, the icons on your desktop, and even your file manager.

GOOD
  • Interface is easily customizable
Things like fading effects, opacity, window positioning are all customizable to the users liking from within the settings of the app, which make for an app that works with anyone workflow or particular theming prerequisites.
  • Easily themed with many available on the web?
Launchy can be easily themed by placing themes into the Launchy theme folder and then selecting that theme from within the apps settings. There are also many user created themes(https://ift.tt/1IAucZH) available which is great for those that want their launcher to match the rest of their OS's theme.
BAD
  • Abandoned?
Launchy was last updated in 2008.
  • Small selection of plugins?
The official plugin page(https://ift.tt/1mhc5y9) on Launchy's homepage hosts just 11 plugins.

8.) Bayden SlickRun

You invoke it with a key press that doesn't infer with other shortcut keys, like Win+Q. It display a small window at the location you want. You type a few letters of a command shortcut. It autocompletes it. Hit Return, the application is launched.

GOOD
  • Create magic words that launch apps, open folders, open web pages
  • Use eyedropper to associate magic word with running windows app
  • Use @multi@ to execute multiple magic words and/or multiple apps, open folders, etc.
  • Option to pass an argument via $W$ parameter
Example: Set the filename or URL to execute to a web browser app, and enter this link(https://ift.tt/2Ktbwn1) in the Parameters text box. When the magic word is executed, a "Dynamic input" dialog is displayed. The text entered in that dialog is passed to $W$.
  • Can handle multiple tasks
It doesn't only run apps with the config you want, it also can execute many commands, automate tasks and run batches to execute more tasks.
  • Can be set to be invisible
For those that do not like the looks of the app it can be set to be invisible so users do not have to look at it.
BAD
  • Manually have to set up what applications it will be able to launch
It only supports the applications you add (those you use really frequently) with the shortcut of your choice.
  • Sometimes Bayden SlickRun seems to be off-line
  • Windows only

9.) Keybreeze

GOOD
  • Preconfigured for convenience
Over 80 popular apps and shortcuts have been preconfigured upon installation of the app making for an easy experience right out of the box to get going.
BAD
  • Does not auto index
This means that users will have to manually setup any shortcuts or apps that they want launched that were not already preconfigured. This can be time consuming for the user.

10.) Keypirinha

Quickly launch applications, files, bookmarks, URLs, sessions (PuTTY, WinSCP, FileZilla), registry keys, and more.

GOOD
  • Whole configuration takes place in config files
This means there's a bit of a learning curve, but once you got how it works, it's great.
  • Very fast
BAD
  • Slight learning curve

11.) WinLaunch

WinLaunch is an OSX like launcher for Windows that allows users to easily organize their apps to their liking in a fullscreen pop up-display.

GOOD
  • Fast access and setup
It enables you to launch any application with very few clicks. If you organize your apps well, you get them in one single click. You may need two or three at most if you need to open a folder or move to another page. I think HotCorners is a great idea, allowing you to view WinLaunch without even clicking. Even setting up your apps in it is fast and intuitive, with simple clicks and drag-n-drops.
  • Marcito
  • Anyone can use it
It is free to use as it is donation-funded.
  • Works with anyones workflow
You can do anything, from launching applications, to adding, grouping and removing them without using the keyboard. There are also keyboard shortcuts available for those that do not like using the mouse, either way the app will work with whatever workflow works best for the user.
BAD
  • Inconvenient manual setup
After installed the first time you pull the launcher up there will be no apps contained within, this means every user will have to manually add the apps they would like in the launcher, which is time consuming. An auto population feature would be more convenient, sadly there is none.

Using one of the XPS family laptops, it has great battery life. Browsing + Working: 6~8 hours; Only writing (Office/Gedit): 10~12 hours; Gaming: 3~4 hours.
  • Great quality
The XPS family laptops have great build quality. Aluminum chassis and everything.
  • Great Linux support
Other than running well Linux, it has Firmware updates and functions such as Keyboard lighting very well integrated with the OS.

BAD

  • Expensive
Although the price is fair, is still is high. For an XPS Dell 13 9360 with some good specs, it will easily rise to prices around 1800€. But if you have that money to spend, it is totally worth it!
  • Hard to find preinstalled with Linux
If you live outside US or the UK you might find it difficult to find a Dell with Linux preinstalled.
  • If preinstalled with Windows, the disk is fully encrypted.
If preinstalled with Windows, it is harder to install Linux since the disk is fully encrypted. This means you need to decrypt the disk in Windows, resize the Windows partition, install Linux, and encrypt Windows partition again...

Asus Zenbook series

GOOD

  • High quality screens
Except for some of the early models of Zenbooks that had average screens, Zenbooks are known for their high quality screens.
  • Excellent chassis design
The chassis is built using brushed aluminium instead of plastic that's more common in laptops. It creates a more rigid construction.
  • Long battery life (7 hours on regular use)
  • Beautiful brushed aluminum aesthetic

Gluglugs laptops have been FSF Respects Your Freedom certified since Dec. 2013.
  • No "Management Engine" backdoor
Gluglug avoids post-2008 Intel chipsets due to the proprietary "Management Engine" which allows remote access to the computer (including the screen, RAM, and storage), and has been exploited to develop low-level rootkits.

BAD

The devices are pretty old IBM laptops, while they do work are definitely not going to be the best performers.

They not only have hardware that supports Ubuntu, but they also actively develop new tech and do bug fixes for the Linux Desktop experience. See here(https://ift.tt/2pX7WGO) for more information.
  • Customizable laptops
They allow for you to choose what components you want in the laptop.
  • Laptops for everyone
From lightweight with a big battery time to game heavy with two GTX graphics cards inside. There is a laptop for everyone.

The system is built for Ubuntu, so Linux support is basically built-in. If you want to swap Ubuntu for some other Linux, you can do so with ease after purchase, and you do not need to worry about whether or not all the laptop features will work.

BAD

  • Bad customer support
Multiple people have reported that the customer support is subpar. Support often tries to avoid replacing defective laptops, applies temporary or wrong fixes and generally avoids taking responsibility.
  • Hardware issues are common
Laptops in multiple instances have arrived defective or started experiencing issues within the first few weeks of use. Notably, ZaReason, a company that, like System76, does not manufacture laptops themselves and instead relies on rebranding Clevo's laptops, has not had as many issues with their laptops, suggesting that the laptops System76 resells are those that don't pass Clevo's quality assurance yet are in working condition.

11 Best Free 3D Offline Android Games With Acceptable Graphics - 2018

6/28/2018

1) Aralon: Forge and Flame

Pro

3D open world

Con

Storyline feels a little bit lacking

2) N.O.V.A. 3: Freedom Edition

A free role playing fps with about 8 hours of campaign.

Pro

Great story line
Although the fps style is not always very flashy when it comes to story lines, Nova 3's interesting story line comes as a pleasent surprise, even if it does not grant the user any choices.

Pro

Great multiplayer
Multiplayer is fun, active, relatively balanced, albeit challenging to newcomers.

Pro

Not in-app-purchase oriented
You can play through the whole game without feeling that you are missing anything.

Pro

Easy to control
The control layout and sensitivity is adjustable for your optimal gaming experience.

Pro

Tons of replay value
The missions are fun, and by completing missions and earning credits, you can unlock new weapons and upgrade abilities in single-player, leading to a great amount of replay value.

Pro

Available in "HD" and "standard" visual settings
There are HD and SD settings so that any device can play this game, be it an older device with low specs or a high end device.

Con

Occasional Lag
On lower-end devices, due to the extensive lighting and high resolution graphics, the game can lag and suffers from occasional framerate drops. This is only a problem on older devices, though.

Con

No gamepad support

Con

Gets very hard
The more you progress in the game, the harder it gets. Although some people enjoy the challenge, many others just stop trying and give up.

3) Stormblades

Stormblades is a casual action game for mobile that sees the player swiping directions on the screen in order to hit enemies with weapons in a specific pattern.

Pro

Casual stripped down gameplay
For those looking for a nice looking game that is geared more towards casual players Stormblades is a good choice as the gameplay is very straightforward in that the game is very linear, leaving little to user choice.

Pro

Free-to-play done well
there are no wait timers in the game, no second or third currency either. The whole game can be played for free with little roadblocks as the in-app-purchases are used for "essence" (the in game currency) which can purchase health potions, even though the game allows you to earn enough by little repetition.

Con

Can be difficult to tell what is going on
Indicators that pop up in the game that signal when to use a powerful strike can often be difficult to see due to the frantic swiping from the gameplay, thumbs can be in the way too easily.

4) Batman Arkham Origins

A free batman battle based game with approximately 17 hours of game play time.

Pro

Good controls
The controls for the game are pretty much swipe timing based, which works great with tablets and phones.

Con

Gets repetitive
The skills unlocked in the game, while fun at first get repetitive very quickly, what is worse is that it takes a lot of grinding to unlock others, which means the current ones being used will be used for a good while.

5) Exiles Zero

A free open world 3d RPG from Crescent Moon Games for android, where the player must attack robots, alien creatures, and travel through deserts on vehicles to get to his mission goals throughout the storyline.

Pro

Open World
You are free to roam where you want, and when you want at your own hearts whim... although the choice of locations you can actually go to are very small. However, a free 3d open world rpg game for Android is a thing to behold as of now.

Pro

Zero in-app purchases
There are no IAPs in the game, everything is given to the user at no cost, though there are advertisements in this version.

Con

Short story
The game can be finished within a few hours, and it just feels like it never gets a due ending.

Con

Lack Of weapons and character-types
Although Exiles Zero is an open world game, there are but a handful of weapons, and you can only select the soldier class.

Con

Huge emptyness
Although some dungeons are a little smaller, most areas are just huge, with almost nothing in them, but a few creatures. And although the game does let you use vehicles, the lack of maps, NPC's in towns, and huge empty areas just give a feeling of wandering in barren deserts.

6) Heroes Reborn: Enigma

Pro

Full voice acting
Many android games have boring text scrolls, or only partial voice acting, but Heroes Enigma has complete voice acting all the way through.

Pro

Puzzle game that knows how to keep the player interested
Puzzle games can get quite boring, but Heroes Enigma keeps you interested with a voice acted narrative, interesting animation clips, and good graphics.

Pro

No paywall
There are no necessary or incredibly useful app purchases to slow you down, just clean puzzles with the features you have. Although there are ads online, the game can be played entirely offline, and Google Play achievements can be synced once the game is completed.

Con

The game has some clichés
A human with extraordinary powers, an abusive scientist that uses someone dear to the main character to make him do what he wants, buttons and never-ending room puzzles... This has all been used a lot before.

7) The Pirate: Caribbian Hunt

Pro

Completely open world
The main goal is definitely to battle ships, but you can do anything your heart desires from building farms and taverns in your ports, to attacking ports for a ransom, and rolling dice aggainst an AI for money.

Pro

Great game mechanics
From raising or lowering sails too maneuver faster and boarding ships with your crew, to transporting people from port to port and finding survivors out in the sea, this game packs a solid punch when it comes to various ways of doing the same thing. It adds logical complications to normal tasks, such as wind, and not being able to sail up against it. All in all, even if there is so much stuff to worry about, the experience is very enjoyable, and filled with surprises.

Pro

Good graphics
Although it does not have the best graphics out there, the game deffinetly looks nice compaired to many others, and is well optimised; wich means it can run on even budget devices.

Pro

Real world
Although the fastest way to get around is to use a 2d map, if you wish to do so, you can jump in a ship and sail to any location in 3d. The whole map is seamless, and contained in one scene. The game even encourages the players to do so by adding hidden docks at strategic locations, giving a sum of money to the player when the ports are found. And by putting ship wrecks with treasure island maps, wich can only be reached in open world.

Con

Can get boring
Although there is allot to do in this game, once you have tried it all, and own the biggest ship, there is nothing very exiting left.

Con

Small story
With only three main objectives, the story comes in a little short.

8) Asphalt 8: Airborne

Asphalt 8: Airborne is a free to play racing game that offers numerous in app purchases that range from $0.99 - $99.99 per item.

Pro

Completely free
While a short game, it is completely free, so there is no real reason not to try it to see if it appeals.

Con

Extremely short
It takes about 8 minutes to complete the game. And the only advancement is unlocking a few weapons.

Advantage
Has hot keys for jumping to the next changed line in the file
Git Gutter exposes the commands `git_gutter_next_change` and `git_gutter_prev_change` for navigating to parts of the file that are different from git. By default they're bound to `ctrl+shift+alt+j` and `ctrl+shift+alt+k`respectively, but you can change them in your user key bindings file.
Advantage
Makes it really easy to see if a line has been inserted, modified or deleted.
Disadvantage
Directory locking causes issues when changing branches
If you have Sublime Text 3 open when switching branches directories are not removed if they are specific to a branch. If you are serious about Javascript you need this. 1: http://www.jshint.com/

Advantage
Finds syntactical errors
Any code base eventually becomes huge at some point, and simple mistakes—that would not show themselves when written—can become show stoppers and waste hours of debugging. And this is when static code analysis tools come into play and help developers to spot such problems. JSHint scans a program written in JavaScript and reports about commonly made mistakes and potential bugs. The potential problem could be a syntax error, a bug due to implicit type conversion, a leaking variable or something else.
